Having grown up in Los Angeles and body surfed in the rolling waves on Santa Monica and Venice Beaches, I've always felt connected to water and although I imagined beautiful brown mermaids, there were none in popular books and movies. The same was true during my daughter's childhood. She once asked me when visiting Oakland's Fairyland with its children's amphitheater backdrop filled with only white angels, "Mommy, aren't there more brown people in the world? Then, why aren't there any brown angels here?" I complained to the City and eventually the mural looked more like the City itself, beautifully diverse. This mermaid is for my daughter...and for the little brown mermaid in me.
